ARIES
Haedus is in the 20th degree of Aries toward the North.......Also from this star are born shepherds who make sweet songs to rustic pipes.

TAURUS



When the Pleiades are descending in the sixth degree ofTaurus, if this degree is attacked by malefic influence, the natives will perish in a shipwreck. .... But if only malefic planets are in aspect, famous gladiators will be born. After taking many palms and prizes they will die fighting with the sword in the favor and applause of the spectators.

Physiognomy ( physis, nature and gnomon, judge, interpreter) is a theory based upon the idea that the assessment of the person's outer appearance, primarily the face, may give insights into one's character or personality. The term physiognomy can also refer to the general appearance of a person, object or terrain, without reference to its implied or scientific characteristics.

Leonardo knew quite well this discipline, because of his studies of anatomy, so every face in this painting is corresponding to the traditional attributions of Apostles in Gospel and in folklore.

The painting is divided into four groups like "le passioni quattro universali casi delli omini" (like passions, four general divisions of mankind).

So from left to right we have Simeone, Taddeo, Matteo, Filippo, Giacobbe V., Tommaso, Giovanni, and then Giuda, Pietro, Andrea, Giacobbe G., Bartolomeo.

 Reresentations of children of planets and allegories of zodiacal signs were common so every Apostle could be easily changed in a zodiacal picture, in the  usual order from Aries to Pisces and the four groups in the painting as the four elements.

Still why John has female traits? 

 

If a woman should be, then more that Maria Maddalena, she should be the Virgin Mary.

They say that Leonardo could not end his work because he was in doubt about Jesus and Judas face and monks should ask many times the painting, so maybe he never painted Judas, just a disembodied hand with a knife.
